To the refined palate, a good scotch whiskey can bring to mind many subtle hints like chocolate, spice, leather, fruit, or even the aroma of a campfire.
Glenmorangie has now however taken things further with the launch of their first ice cream-flavoured single malt, which to a beer-guzzling philistine such as moi sounds a lot like replacing the sophisticated pairing of an oaky whiskey and cigar with a boozy ice cream and bubblegum vape.
The latest in the “A Tale Of” series from Glenmorangie is meant to capture the nostalgia of a “simple bowl of ice cream”, or at least be inspired by it, but despite our immediate revulsion, connoisseurs say it actually works.
The unique blend was created using virgin casks that were specially toasted to bring out higher levels of vanillin – the chemical compound in wood that imbues the whisky with vanilla flavour as it ages – as well as traditional bourbon barrels.
According to head of whisky creation Dr. Bill Lumsden (the man in charge of coming up with many of the distillery’s ideas) and master blender Gillian Macdonald the whisky was “inspired by the menu of an ice cream parlour and all that evokes”.
“By ageing Glenmorangie in bourbon and high-vanillin casks, we have deliciously magnified our whisky’s sweetest, creamiest side. With notes of peach melba, lemon sorbet, coconut flakes and rich vanilla, sipping Glenmorangie A Tale of Ice Cream is like sinking your spoon into a carousel of flavour.”
A Tale of Ice Cream is the sixth in the “A Tale Of” series, which also includes a Tale of the Forest, created with barley kilned with forest botanicals, and a Tale of Cake, a collaboration with pastry chef Dominique Ansel and completed in Tokaji wine barrels.

A Tale of Ice Cream is already available in South Africa (even Makro stocks it), so if you are into weird combinations that work, you can pick up a bottle for about R1,450 – almost cheaper than Häagen-Dazs, and not as fattening.
Next up: Gatsby-flavoured Klipdrift.
