In a dramatic turn this week, a trove of cash, including foreign currency and four Krugerrands, was officially forfeited to the government this week, a dramatic conclusion to a 2018 raid on a Tamboerskloof property.
The Hawks have finally received the forfeiture order from the Western Cape High Court, as confirmed by the spokesperson Zinzi Hani.
The raid was triggered by a tip-off in April 2018, linking a professional DJ and associates to narcotics. The Hawks’ search revealed hidden safes throughout the house, each filled with cash, drugs, and weaponry.
As the team meticulously searched the premises, they landed on a concealed safe tucked away in the cupboard of the main bedroom. When they pried it open, they were met with the staggering sight of a large stash of cash – and that was just the beginning.
Alongside the cash, they uncovered a bag filled with cocaine powder, a compressed block of the potent drug, two precision scales, a measuring spoon, and a variety of other drug-related paraphernalia, painting a vivid picture of illicit activity.
The investigation intensified as they discovered a second safe on the property, revealing even more cash and a trove of foreign currency, further deepening the intrigue.
Then, a third safe was unearthed, containing a licensed firearm and 20 rounds of ammunition, along with more cash, hinting at the dangerous underbelly of the operation. Among the finds, two Ecstasy tablets were also found, reinforcing the gravity of the situation and the extent of the criminal dealings that had taken place within those walls. About 4kg of MDMA was found in a locked outside room on the property, too.
The value of the drugs seized was approximately R2.4 million.
The search was expanded to the rest of the premises where more cash was found in a Mercedes Benz ML500 SUV owned by the suspect.
Hani said that the forfeiture order was obtained for the cash, foreign currency and four Krugerrands implicated in the criminal case, with a total value of R361,832.
What a bust.
