Colonies grow up so fast, don’t they? One century they prostrate themselves before you and the next they deny you were ever their God-appointed ruler.
King Charles received a frosty welcome during his visit to the Crown’s former colony of Australia, with hostilities towards the poor king spilling into Australia’s Parliament House on the second official day of his engagements in the country.
Independent senator Lidia Thorpe struggled to hide her disdain for the monarch as she interrupted the ceremony in the capital city of Canberra by shouting for about a minute before she was escorted away by security.
The King had just walked away from a lectern to rejoin Queen Camilla sitting on the stage when Thorpe started shouting as she walked forward from the back of the assembly.
After making claims of genocide against “our people”, she could be heard yelling: “This is not your land, you are not my King.”
Thorpe is the first Aboriginal woman from Victoria to become a senator. When she was sworn into parliament, she declined to swear an oath of allegiance to the deceased Queen.
The senator was among perhaps 20 people who protested when the royals placed a wreath at Canberra’s war monument earlier in the day. Her attempt to confront the King happened after he addressed notable lawmakers and dignitaries at Parliament House in Canberra.
The ceremony was concluded without any reference to the incident, and the royal couple proceeded to meet the less hostile crowds who had gathered to see the King.
One Indigenous leader who earlier welcomed the royals to Australia’s capital on Monday also called on him to apologise for colonial wrongs, but as can be expected, King Charles merely said “In my many visits to Australia I witnessed the courage and hope that have guided the nation’s long and sometimes difficult journey towards reconciliation”
