Debate continues to swirl around the proposed relocation of Tsogo Sun Caledon’s casino to Somerset West. The Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board recently held public hearings where locals voiced strong opinions, and no decision has yet been made.

Concerns raised by residents are mainly around the casino’s potential impact on the Helderberg community. Issues like proximity to schools and the economic strain on local families are key talking points. 

The Somerset West Ratepayers Association described the casino as “socially irresponsible,” citing its location next to an impoverished area and concerns about undesirable activities like drug use.

Further investigations like probity checks, municipal approvals, and land use certifications are needed. These need to happen before a final decision can be made. Wacker and community leaders are pushing the board to think about the bigger implications for Somerset West before granting any approvals.

South Africa’s gambling industry is no small matter. According to the National Gambling Board, the industry generated over R30 billion in gross gambling revenue in 2022. Despite its economic contributions, the impact of gambling remains a huge debate. Local municipalities, schools, and neighbourhood groups continue to express their apprehensions about the casino’s potential to harm vulnerable populations. Additionally, studies have shown that casinos near schools and residential areas can exacerbate problems like crime.
