Plett Shark Spotters reported a record 104 shark sightings along its coastline in September – the most sightings in a single month this year.
While the number of sightings seems high, they were spread across five beaches and may have been a single shark searching for Nemo.
The increased monitoring of the Plett coastline is due to a collaboration between the Plett Shark Action Group and Shark Spotters, an experienced shark safety group that has been operating in Cape Town since 2004. Together they have implemented effective shark protection operations at critical beaches in the region.
Today, trained spotters operate at five of Plett’s busiest beaches, creating 14 full-time employment and skills development opportunities for locals from under-resourced communities. On top of this, they also partner with and support existing local conservation organisations to increase their conservation impact in the area.
Despite the amazing work these okes are doing, they still rely 100% on donations to keep going.Fortunately for them, 2oceansvibe readers not only have a deep love for our oceans but also dig the holiday vibes in Plett. So why not consider helping these guys out, so they can keep beach-goers safe while at the same time collecting valuable research data?
