Despite reports that Schumacher made an appearance at his daughter’s wedding at their Majorca villa last week, one of his closest friends has expressed doubts about the racing icon’s chances of recovering from his devastating injuries.
Schumacher reportedly showed up before guests, who had to ditch their phones to ensure no snaps were taken, to witness his daughter’s big day, marking a glimmer of hope amidst his long-standing health battle.
Though his attendance has not been verified, German newspaper Bild said it was “very likely” that Michael was in attendance, as he has been flown out to the Majorca villa before.
Despite this, close friends of the Formula 1 champion say his condition is not getting better, with F1 journalist Roger Benoit, known for his bond with the Schumachers, bleakly referring to Michael’s condition as ‘a case without hope’.
“There is only one answer to this question and that is simply what his son Mick gave in one of his rare interviews in 2022: ‘I would give anything to talk to dad’.”
Schumacher’s condition is still secret, and his wife Corinna is fiercely protective of their privacy. Schumacher’s former racing teammate Philippe Streiff revealed in 2014 that Michael was paralysed and needed a wheelchair, but the current situation has yet to be confirmed.
“He is getting better but everything is relative. It’s very difficult. He can’t speak. He me, he is in a wheelchair paralysed. He has memory problems and speech problems.”
One of the few people granted access to Schumacher by the family is Jean Todt, previous FIA head honcho and Ferrari frontman. Todt, however, warns against believing everything in the media.
“We respect the privacy wishes of Corinna and her children, although we know of course that the accident had consequences. But anyone who says they know something knows nothing.”
Elisabetta Gregoraci, ex-wife of former F1 team boss Flavio Briatore, was the one who confirmed Michael has been spending more time at the family’s Majorcan villa of late.
“Michael doesn’t speak, he communicates with his eyes. Only three people can visit him and I know who they are.”
Whether or not the world will be able to see Schumacher again remains to be seen, but his reported presence at his daughter’s wedding (if true), is perhaps a sign that the racing world may get to see their champion again. For now, his wife, Corinna is the only one who knows the true nature of his condition.
“We’re trying to carry on as a family, the way Michael liked it and still does. And we are getting on with our lives. It’s very important to me that he can continue to enjoy his private life as much as possible.”
“Michael always protected us, and now we are protecting Michael,” Corinna concluded.
