Siya Kolisi, the first black captain of the Springboks, symbolises unity, resilience, and hope for many South Africans.
To highlight the values of inclusivity and togetherness that Kolisi represents and to celebrate the inspiring legacy of the Springbok captain, Cape Road in Gqeberha is set to be renamed Siya Kolisi Road.
The Eastern Cape Geographical Names Council confirmed via SABC News that the council had received an application for the name change of one of the busiest roads in Gqeberha, Cape Road to Siya Kolisi Road.
This initiative, spearheaded by Chairperson Christian Martin, represents a growing appreciation for local heroes who inspire and unify their communities.
Cape Road is the old road that linked Cape Town and Gqeberha, which is a perfect route to rename after such a legend. It is also not just any road, serving as a crucial link connecting several metro neighbourhoods to the N2 highway, making the renaming a matter of substantial civic importance, per Cape Town Today:
Its strategic significance extends beyond its physical connectivity, symbolizing a broader narrative of unity and perseverance. Renaming it after Siya Kolisi, a national icon known for his leadership and resilience, would imbue the road with a collective sense of pride and aspiration.
Martin says the application was submitted by one of the Springboks’ supporters Sherwin Jeptha and now a public hearing will be held for the name change.
“The Eastern Cape Geographical Names has received committee has received an application to Siya Kolisi’s name. This is the second name we have received including R75 to become Rassie Erasmus. What we are doing is to register all these names and will consult with relevant municipalities. We will consult NMB and public hearings will be held.”
Born into modest circumstances in Zwide, Kolisi rose to captain the national rugby team and led them to World Cup glory. His story is one of perseverance, leadership, and unity, reflecting a societal shift towards inclusivity and recognition of diverse talents – something SA is really craving right now.
