A woman was caught in a bizarre and shocking theft – stealing a casket with a body still inside – after downing six beers and claiming to have “blacked out”.
When confronted by police, she insisted she had no memory of the strange heist, all thanks to her alcohol-fueled blackout.
Patricia Sierra now faces charges of burglary, grand larceny, and disturbing human remains in connection with the August 27 incident that was caught on surveillance footage, per the New York Post.
In the early hours of the morning, Las Vegas police were tipped off to a disturbing scene outside the Affordable Cremation & Burial Service. A body lay face down on the rocks near the front walkway, its feet eerily wrapped in plastic bags, while the casket it had been in was carelessly abandoned on the nearby sidewalk.
The haunting discovery, detailed in an arrest report obtained by USA Today, left officers piecing together the bizarre mystery.
The dead person had arrived at the funeral home on August 20 with a viewing on the 26, a day before the mind-boggling theft. Soon after, police reviewed the surveillance footage, uncovering the shocking moment a woman, later identified as Sierra, smashed the front window of the funeral home. The footage revealed her reaching through the shattered glass to unlock the door and gain entry, according to the report.
The footage then captured Sierra boldly entering the viewing room, where she proceeded to drag the casket out through the front door. In a surreal sequence, she made several trips in and out of the funeral home before finally vanishing from the scene, casket in tow.
Police managed to arrest Sierra two days later when someone recognised her at a nearby convenience store.
When speaking with officers, Sierra said she “was not trying to be malicious and was apologetic” about the incident, blaming it on a substance abuse problem that causes her to “black out” frequently, according to the report.
A detective interviewing Sierra later showed her surveillance footage of the robbery, which she said she did not remember committing and told police she “blacked out from drinking six beers”.
If she was honest, she would admit it had to be way more than six beers.
