A dog in Tulsa, Oklahoma, must have woken up and chosen chaos and destruction the morning it started an impromptu house fire.
The dog had found a juicy portable phone battery charger and was chewing away when suddenly sparks flew and a fire began raging on the mattress, sending his buddies scadaddling out of there.
The Tulsa Fire Department recently released dramatic footage of the fire, which took place in May, showing the portable cellphone battery sparking and bursting into flames.
The fire quickly ravaged the home, leaving behind a trail of destruction. Miraculously, the pets managed to escape unscathed, fleeing through a dog door just in time.
Andy Little, spokesperson for the fire department, confirmed their remarkable survival, per ABC News.
“However, the outcome could’ve been much worse if there had been no means of escape or if the family was asleep at the time,” Little added.
Watch the critical moment unfold:
Lithium-ion battery fires are a “critical issue” that has been affecting fire departments in the US and, no doubt, all over the world.
The batteries, commonly used to charge cellphones, are “known for storing a significant amount of energy in a compact space,” Little said. So when this energy is released uncontrollably, “it can generate heat, produce flammable and toxic gases and even lead to explosions,” he added.
Experts warn that extreme heat exposure, physical damage, overcharging and using incompatible charging equipment can lead to the devices catching fire.
The public is urged to exercise caution with lithium-ion batteries, including storing them out of reach of children and pets – this video serves as a good example of what chaos can ensue if this advice is not heeded.
To dispose of the devices, they should be brought to a designated recycling centre or hazardous waste collection point and not simply thrown in the garbage, which could damage the batteries and potentially cause fires.
