The Cape of Good Hope SPCA has condemned some Kommetjie community members for an attack on a local baboon troop on the evening of Sunday, 4 August 2024.
Residents went out wielding sticks and using pepper spray in an “aggressive and unlawful” attack against the baboons who had approached the town to roost, causing significant distress and harm to the animals.
The situation reached a boiling point when animal activists, attempting to protect the baboons, clashed with the residents, the SPCA reported.
Regrettably, one baboon was severely impacted by pepper spray, causing it to suffer from visual impairment. Furthermore, in its disoriented state, it was injured by electrocution on an electric fence while attempting to escape.
The Cape of Good Hope SPCA Inspectors were called to the scene to intervene, rescuing the injured baboon and transporting it to the Wildlife Department for urgent care.
“Despite our best efforts, the animal’s prognosis remains uncertain.”
In response to these distressing events, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA has initiated a thorough investigation, collecting evidence to proceed with a criminal case of animal cruelty in terms of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962. Additionally, the organisation has approached CapeNature to explore further charges under the Nature Conservation Ordinance.
Chief Inspector Jaco Pieterse issued a stern warning in light of the incident: “We urge the public to respect the law and the rights of animals. Taking matters into your own hands and inflicting harm on wildlife is not only illegal but also morally reprehensible. Be assured, we will pursue justice aggressively for these acts of cruelty. No one is above the law.”
Anyone with information about this incident is urged to come forward to assist in the investigation – you can call the Inspectorate on 021 700 4158/9 or send an email to inspectorate@spca-ct.co.za
