A disgruntled employee shot the manager of the five-star Tintswalo Safari Lodge in Limpopo four times over the weekend, leaving her severely injured, but miraculously alive.
Emily Leuner, 38, was shot after a disciplinary hearing when the employee returned to the lodge and shot her four times in the upper body and legs, before going back to his residence and taking his own life.
Police spokesperson Captain Magonseni Nkosi confirmed the shooting, saying that an attempted murder charge was being investigated.
“These people are working for the same company, and it seems like they had a misunderstanding. We believe it is job-related. It resulted in the deceased [employee] shooting the victim [Leuner], who was taken to hospital where she is recovering.”
Leuner is now in the intensive care unit at Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg after being evacuated from Hoedspruit.
“Emily is stable and conscious, but has sustained serious spinal and lung injuries, which will require extensive treatment and rehabilitation.”
According to The Citizen, Leuner has been left paralysed after one of the bullets lodged in her spine.
Leuner’s husband Alistair, who is the regional general manager for Tintswalo Safari Products, and their young children were at her bedside, according to the CEO of the Tintswalo Collection, Lisa Goosen.
“Tintswalo requests that the family’s privacy is respected during Emily’s recovery process going forward.”
Tintswalo Safari Lodge is located inside the Manyeleti Nature Reserve near the greater Kruger area in Hoedspruit.
