Bystanders near the BMW dealership on Cape Town’s Foreshore were treated to an unscripted scene from an action movie when a brand new BMW M2 came “flying” through the air, “landing perfectly between two other cars”.
News24 reports the luxury car was brand new and only bought in January. The owner was in town looking for ‘numberplate fittings’ when it lost control and smashed into three parked vehicles while travelling at high speed.
Fortunately, nobody was injured, but both the driver and witnesses likely soiled themselves a little. Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed the accident.
“It is alleged that, at 14:30, the driver of the BMW motor vehicle was travelling straight in Hertzog Boulevard Road and DF Malan Road in the City Bowl…and lost control and collided with three parked vehicles inside a parking bay area.”
Bystanders had different accounts of what happened, with some saying the car was out for a test drive. BMW, however, said the vehicle was sold months ago, adding that they would not be able to comment on the client’s personal information. You can’t blame BMW for not wanting to talk about a wrecked BMW in their parking lot.
Eyewitnesses had plenty to say.
“I was sitting in my car, having lunch, and then I heard a loud bang. For some reason, my mind went blank… then, in a few seconds, I looked to my left and I saw a huge, luxurious BMW had crashed.”
“I couldn’t process what just happened. I got out of my car and immediately noticed that my car was bumped in front. I was very lucky. That car could have landed on top of me.”
“The guy was driving at a high speed, but I don’t know what distracted him. I don’t know how I feel… I am happy I am still alive, but the thought of what could have happened to me drives me crazy.”
Another eyewitness said she heard “what sounded like a car spinning”.
“Before I could make sense of everything, I saw a car flying and landing perfectly between two other cars. One car had its owner in it and the other one was empty.
“The driver was a young guy… he walked out, carrying a Gucci side bag, and there was a passenger. They looked like they didn’t sustain any injuries.
According to the eyewitness, the driver of the BMW appeared unharmed and “immediately took a cigarette out of his bag and started smoking”.
It’s a miracle nobody was hurt. At this stage, it’s still not entirely clear how the accident happened, or whether the driver found the license plate fittings he was searching for.
