South Africa’s only proper ski resort, Tiffindell, has updated its website to announce that the resort is now officially closed, and looking for potential buyers.
Another victim of COVID-19, Tiffindell was forced to halt operations due to lockdown restrictions in 2020 and 2021, and in 2023, restrictions were not lifted in time for the resort to prepare for ski season.
Inconsistent snowfall over the years added to Tiffindell’s downfall, and even with snowmaking machines, the cost of running the equipment created unsustainable expenses for the business.
The ski resort has served adventurous South Africans since 1993 and was ranked the 19th-best ski run in the world in 2014.
Today, visitors to their website are greeted with a ‘For Sale‘ pop-up with contact details for Chris Stevens, a longtime supporter of Tiffindell and CEO of Chris Stevens Real Estate, who will be handling the sale.
Pictures from early June 2024 show the resort covered in snow – a far cry from the glory days of one of South Africa’s most iconic destinations.
Whoever ends up buying this place will own a piece of South African history, and hopefully, future generations will have the opportunity to experience the snowy playground that was Tiffindell.
