The Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) festival took place in Las Vegas over the weekend of 17-19 May, and people are freaking out over social media posts that show how much the booze cost at the event.
The electronic music festival in the US is a hotspot for some of the best techno, house and dubstep artists and attracts over half a million music lovers every year. It’s like the slightly less hippie version of Burning man, in Vegas.
Tickets for the festival certainly don’t come cheap and according to Seat Geek, you can nab a spot at EDC for as low as $343 (R6,300) but the ‘average price’ of a ticket is a crazy $912 (R16,700). Comparing these prices to our own ZAR is terrifying enough, but when it comes to the non-chemical snacks, the EDC becomes a millionaire’s playground.
A social media post of the price list for drinks at the festival shows that a bottle of Jack Daniel’s whiskey went for $875 (R16,000), while a six-pack of beer was $140 (R2,570). Even if you just wanted some water, you would still have to hand over $90 (R1,600). No wonder the kids are all on drugs.

People were understandably outraged, commenting “How can this be legal?”, and “I love seeing people spend my yearly rent on drinks at EDC – reminds me of how poor I am.” One person did however point out that the prices were “actually decent for Vegas.”
Ja, no thanks. Even if the shot prices weren’t equal to a month’s rent, the jol looks like it reeks of bubblegum and PLUR; we’ll rather go to the Burn, where you can ‘buy’ a beer with a hug.
