Residents of Constantia are seemingly up in arms over a proposed new development planned for Erf 2133, better known as 89 Constantia Main Road.
The charge has been led by the owners of Chardonnay Deli, which is located right next to Erf2133, and thus will be dealing with the fallout of building a ‘commercial development’.
The owners of Chardonnay Deli recently put out an impassioned plea on Instagram to ask folks in the southern suburbs to ‘keep Constantia Valley a small town’ by objecting to the unwanted erection on Main Road.

According to the City of Cape Town, the application is to develop the ‘well-positioned land, with excellent accessibility and location in an established commercial context.’
The property lies smack-bang in between Chardonnay Deli and the High Constantia Shopping Centre – about 1.4km from Constantia Village.
A three-storey commercial development is proposed, with two levels of semi-basement parking and a rooftop level with an extruded box of additional GLA. For the most part the floor area is made up of commercial office space, with smaller boxes for potential retail stores located at the active street level between the pedestrian and vehicular access points.
Behold, more malls:
The application to rezone and develop the area is published in a lengthy 42-page document on the City of Cape Town resources page, so we won’t go into too much detail. But if you are interested, you can find the document here.As Chardonnay Deli noted, anyone who has objections to the proposed development can fill in this form and let the city know via email at: comment_objections.southern@capetown.gov.za
You can have your say on this plan, but a resident we met outside of Chardonnay Deli, Tom, did not seem too chuffed:
‘The last thing we need is a year of bloody roadworks and trucks and then another mall. It’ll ruin the vibe in Constantia. Leave the valley alone.”
