Please, raise a toast to the roast of Cape Town!
The Mother City of “perfectly percolated caffeine culture”, as The Citizen puts it, has just been recognised by Food & Wine magazine’s 2024 list of the World’s Top 10 Cities for Coffee.
Determined by a Global Tastemakers panel of more than 180 travel and drinks experts, the ranking celebrates the best culinary destinations worldwide.
“Globally, we consume about 2.25 billion cups a day. But where, exactly, can you find the best cup?”, the prestigious US culinary magazine asks.
Well, Cape Town, it turns out, is one such place.
While the Danish capital of Copenhagen rates as the best destination for globe-trotting caffeine cravers, Cape Town was awarded the ninth spot. With the likes of Origin Coffee, Truth Coffee, and Deluxe Coffee Works we really do have a lot to boast in the world of cuppas, koffies, kofus, and ikhofis – however you prefer to refer to your daily fix.
Food & Wine writes:
Coffee-loving visitors to Cape Town can expect precision excellence with every sip. Here, shops place a significant emphasis on bean origins and sustainability. Taste that high-end brew at spots like Truth Coffee Roasting, which is often regarded as one of the best coffee shops in the world, or Deluxe Coffeeworks, which now has several shops sprinkled across the city.

Enver Duminy, CEO of Cape Town Tourism, said that “Cape Town’s recognition as one of the world’s best cities for coffee is a testament to our local community’s passion, creativity, and resilience.”
“From the exceptional roasters to the skilled baristas, our city’s coffee scene reflects the vibrant and diverse culture that makes Cape Town so special.”
Beyond Truth Coffee Roasting – which has been voted the world’s best coffee shop by The Daily Telegraph two years in a row for its high-end brew, emphasis on bean origins, as well as sustainability – the city’s other coffee initiatives do an amazing job of uplifting and uniting communities across the board.

Although there are a handful of internationally renowned brands promising to deliver your caffeine fix here in the Mother City when you choose to rather go local, at least you know that you are doing yourself a major favour.
If anything, this ranking serves as a reminder to spend your money with small businesses and seek out people passionate about the perfect pour in this vibrant and highly caffeinated city.
