Princess Beatrice’s ex-boyfriend Paolo Liuzzo was found dead in a Miami hotel room following a suspected drug overdose.
The 42-year-old was discovered at the citizenM Worldcenter Hotel, a four-star hotel in downtown Miami, shortly after 3PM on February 7, the Miami Police Department told The Sun.
The cause of death has not officially been reported, but Officer Michael Vega said they were investigating an overdose death; “The investigation is open and ongoing”, he said.
The British royal, who is a daughter of the disgraced Prince Andrew, started dating Liuzzo in 2005 when she was just 17 and he was 24. The pair split up in 2006.
Insiders claimed Liuzzo had struggled with drugs for some time, and been plunged into a “vicious cycle” of gambling-related debt, saying that he had racked up huge debts with loan sharks, according to The Sun.
“Paolo was not doing great on a personal level,” one friend told The Sun. “It was a very fast lifestyle and we all feared it would catch up with him eventually.”
The insider revealed that he had begun using a lot of pharmaceutical drugs but that later led to cocaine and harder drugs. Liuzzo was even arrested in Australia over a string of offences including the possession of cocaine, Daily Mail reported. He was arrested on the Gold Coast in September 2009 after crashing a $90,000 black Audi hire car into traffic lights. 27 years old at the time, he also failed to pay for his accommodation and restaurant bills at Conrad Jupiter Casino.

But really, his hectic lifestyle began in 2002 when he was charged with the manslaughter of a fellow student at the College of the Holy Cross.
His fellow student, 19-year-old Jonathan R. Duchatellier, died as a result of a fight that took place on May 5, 2002 in an off-campus apartment building at 510 Cambridge St. which involved Liuzzo. The charge was later reduced to assault and Liuzzo served a community sentence.
Why Beatrice didn’t fling him away with his already-apparent red flags at the time is beyond anyone’s understanding, but one might deduce that it had something to do with having a profoundly problematic father.
The dude, who hails from Woodbury in New York, was considered an American socialite at the time of his romance with Beatrice. When reports of this manslaughter incident eventually surfaced in 2006, Beatrice ended things, but her father wished she hadn’t. Apparently, Prince Andrew encouraged Beatrice’s romance with Liuzzo, despite the seven-year age difference and his criminal past.
The royal parents even invited Liuzzo on a family vacation to the exclusive Swiss ski resort Verbier in 2006. It subsequently emerged that Liuzzo had flouted the conditions of his probation to holiday with the royals. He was consequently hauled back to the US where he had his three-year probation extended by the courts as punishment, forcing Beatrice to officially end the fledgling romance.
In 2007, he caused embarrassment to the Royal Family by alleging that marijuana was smoked in the presence of Beatrice, her sister Eugenie, and their mother, Sarah Ferguson, during their holiday in Jamaica.
The self-described playboy also confessed to cheating on Beatrice during their relationship and boasted that she had wanted to introduce him to the Queen.
Beatrice was reportedly devastated when their relationship came to an end, and she subsequently returned to Goldsmiths, a constituent college of the University of London.

Beatrice is now married to the multi-millionaire property developer Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, having tied the knot in 2020, and having their daughter Sienna shortly after.
Liuzzo’s death certificate listed his residence as an apartment building close to the citizenM hotel. He was listed as single and his occupation as an art industry consultant, according to The Sun.
Princess Beatrice reportedly received news of her ex-boyfriend’s passing mere weeks following her mother, Sarah, Duchess of York, being diagnosed with skin cancer.
