“Coke Tax” Approved In France

Having taxes on the things that are bad for you is something everyone has to deal with. There’s tax on smoking, tax on booze, and tax on gambling. In a move to remove all the fun out of your life, the French government has now introduced a tax on sugary soft drinks.

The move comes as part of the government’s attempts to try and curb the rampant spread of worldwide obesity. The tax works out to roughly one Euro cent per can of cold sugary beverage, and this tax is estimated to bring in funds to the tune of 120 million Euros.

This is a surprising move for France, I feel, given that it is practically the capital of smoking, wine, butter and salt – all things known to help fight obesity. Do you really think fighting soft drinks is going to help the cause? Does anyone in France even drink soft drinks? That’s a white wine spritzer, right?
