A self-described ‘bougie’ TikToker named Lesedi Mashale is getting her 15 minutes of fame after showcasing her R8,343.25 meal at the exclusive Rikū Chef’s Counter at the Old Biscuit Mill in Cape Town.
Mashale shared her ostentatious story of having to pay a deposit to visit the restaurant and that the bill included the dinner menu (R1,995 per person) and the drink pairing (R1,490 per person), as well as water at R95 a bottle.
The exclusive Rikū Chef’s Counter is the brainchild of acclaimed Chef Rikku O’Donnchu. The restaurant has a seating capacity of only 12 as well as a list of prescriptive regulations guests are subject to when booking.
If you consider the cost of this restaurant a bougie step too far, consider that ‘Chef Rikku is the former Executive/Head Chef of prestigious restaurants, Global Best Restaurant 2019 GÅTE Stellenbosch; 5 Diamond Amorette In Pennsylvania US; Immersion, collaborating with Michelin Star restaurants from around the US; Michelin Star Restaurant Adam’s in Birmingham UK and Michelin Korean fusion restaurant in Orlando US, DOSHI’, as per their website.
With accolades like that, Chef Rikku sounds as if he might be able to cure cancer with a macaroon, but the whole experience just seems a tad excessive. We enjoy fine dining, but no matter how cutting-edge your cuisine may be, R8k is a lot for a meal, especially if the stall next door has pretty decent lamb falafels at R50, which you can eat on the hay bails with the other plebs. I’m a philistine, I know.
Check out Lesedi Mashale’s bank-account-busting dining experience below.
@lesedi_mashale The price of this meal for 2 was astronomical, wow. Dinner was a treat and the food 9/10 though. Margarita was the second best i’ve ever had #fyp #datenight #dinnerincapetown #michelinstar ♬ original sound – Lesedi Mashale
