“It is a different kind of man who can go through all of that and still give me the information I needed to help him”.
These words from a security company employee say it all after a Mpumalanga farmer, who was shot multiple times on his farm in White River, managed to limp two kilometres to get help.
Armed robbers accosted Johan le Roux on his farm near the Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport on Sunday afternoon. The armed men shot Le Roux multiple times before tying him up in his house and making off with his bakkie, cell phones and guns.
Le Roux managed to free himself and with gunshot wounds to his chest, upper leg and right forearm, managed to make his way to his farmworkers’ compound from where private security was contacted.
A Hi-Tech Security official from White River raced to the scene where he “found a bloodied Le Roux and one of his workers in the middle of a crowd between a compound and the main house”.
“He lost a lot of blood due to the wounds. He was… bleak and full of blood.”
The security official said that Le Roux managed to tell him that “the gunmen had overpowered him, shot him, took him in the house, and tied him up”.
“He was able to free himself, walked to the compound where his workers lived, and send out a message to ask for help.”
While waiting for emergency services and the cops, they contacted a tracking company to trace Le Roux’s bakkie, which was found close to where the robbers had fled “through a fence”.
ER24 representative Ineke van Huyssteen stated that Le Roux had numerous gunshot wounds and a shattered right arm. “He was found to be in a serious condition, was treated at the scene, and transported to hospital in a stable condition.”
The official who was first to respond is quoted by News24 as saying”It is a different kind of man who can go through all of that, [then] walk 2km for help, and still give me the information I needed to help him. I am praying hard for his recovery.”
Afrikaans has a good word for people like Le Roux: Yster.
