A team of rescuers were dispatched to Lions Head after a regular hiker alerted them to an “unconscious teen lying in a fetal position”.
A team of professionals and volunteers from Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR) eventually located the teen amongst the debris of what appeared to have been a party.
Kosta Papageorgiou, the chairperson of Friends of Lions Head and Signal Hill, said the kid was found “lying in a fetal position, seemingly suffering from dehydration, heat stroke, and likely intoxication with closed eyes”. Surrounding the teen was DJ equipment packed in bags and scattered empty 750ml bottles.
Paramedics from the Western Cape Department of Health & Wellness EMS, accompanied by volunteer rescuers and Table Mountain National Park Rangers helped the inebriated DJ regain consciousness and then assisted him down the mountain.
“The part of this that stood out is how absurd the whole incident was.”
David Nel, spokesperson for the Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR), ‘expressed dismay over the occurrence, particularly in light of the heatwave, and underscores the blatant disregard for both the environment and fellow mountain enthusiasts’.
Fortunately, the teenager did not sustain any injuries.
