Another day, another kidnapped and robbed foreigner as South Africa’s criminals continue to showcase the worst of our country to the world.
This time it’s a poor British Airways pilot who was “kidnapped and tortured” during a stopover shopping trip in Johannesburg.
Sky News reports that British Airways is supporting a colleague and local authorities with their investigation after the pilot was reportedly tortured and left “penniless” following an abduction at a supermarket car park, north of the Melrose Arch complex in Johannesburg.
The BA pilot was reportedly approached by a woman who requested help with her bags. When they reached her vehicle, he was pushed inside by a group of men and driven to a remote part of the city to be “badly roughed up”.
Newspaper reports a source claiming the pilot was only released after he was left “penniless”. An alert was sent to airline staff notifying them that a crew member “was abducted” outside a supermarket.
“It’s staggering what happened to the pilot. It was like something out of the movies,” a source is reported as saying. A movie called South Africa, yes. And the world is watching.
According to the police report, the pilot “endured hours of torture and physical assaults. It only ended when he was left penniless. He is just happy to be alive.”
With people like Bheki Cele in charge of our safety, South Africa might have to change their billboards at international airports to “We’re glad you got out alive”.
