South Africa’s collective sense of humour is often directly proportionate to the level of absurdity we are exposed to, so it’s little wonder that when Eskom began murmuring about a ‘new logo and corporate identity’, we were quick to offer a few suggestions.
Everyone knows that the changing of names has always been an effective cure for bad governance, so it was only a matter of time before the proposal was raised as a solution to our energy woes.
After all, since changing its name to Gqeberha, erstwhile Port Elizabeth has become a beacon of excellent local governance, and since Gillooly’s Interchange became known as George Bizos Interchange, there are no more potholes.
It’s a heady mix of alchemy and sleight of hand, with a good dollop of political bullsh*t. Add in a R5 million name-changing tender, and we’re really cooking.
It’s a big joke really, and South Africans offered their own punchlines to the proposed ‘new Eskom’:
So apparently, @Eskom_SA are pushing ahead with their logo redesign, which will probably cost millions.
I’m all about Good Things though, so I created this new logo that you can have for FREE.
I think it works quite nicely. pic.twitter.com/3pjRT5qEZX

Since this is all we’ll see of it. This should be the new Eskom logo. pic.twitter.com/marEJ9mr6A

While we’re busy designing logos, I am going to propose that Eskom launches the new logo with an ad.
But not just any ad.
A remake of The Lion King with this playing out in the movie.
Might cost a penny but it seems that Eishkom is into frivolous spending right now. pic.twitter.com/mAnXdlsx8X

Eskom’s R24-billion loss in 2022/23 as well as a 31% tariff hike over two years is no joke, but when dealing with anything government-related, it’s best to have a sense of humour.
As for Eskom, it needs a new logo as much as Minister Nkoana-Mashabane needs another hole in her head.
