Oscar Pistorius has been granted parole and is set for release in early January 2024. The parole board spent less than an hour deliberating over whether Pistorius qualified for release.
According to the Department of Correctional Services, after he is freed, he “will be monitored until his sentence officially expires just like all other parolees”.
News24 reported earlier that June Steenkamp submitted an impact statement during the hearing, saying “she did not believe that Pistorius was rehabilitated and, if this was the case, feared for the safety of women if he was released”.
“I do not believe Oscar’s version, that he thought the person in the toilet was a burglar. In fact, I do not know anybody who does.” She added that “while she does not believe her daughter’s killer has shown remorse, she had nonetheless decided to forgive him long ago as I knew most certainly that I would not be able to survive if I had to cling to my anger.”
Steenkamp did not attend the parole hearing on Friday, saying: “I simply cannot muster the energy to face him again at this stage”.
Who can?
