Sorry, Lauren Sánchez, but you do not get to step out of your personal helicopter after taking a 400,000-acre aerial tour of the Blue Origin space facility and expansive multimillion-dollar ranch combo that you share with your billionaire fiancé Jeff Bezos and declare that you are by any means a regular person with a “pretty normal” life.
Sánchez’s ridiculous revelation was given to a Vogue reporter as the 53-year-old was featured in the December issue of the illustrious fashion magazine with the title ‘Lauren Sánchez Is Looking to the Future‘. I am now realising that it basically means she is thoroughly out of touch with the current reality.
The Vogue piece takes us mere mortals on a tour of their otherworldly perch, “filled with climate hypocrisy and margaritas”, notes The New York Post.

Describing morning coffee, school drop-offs, and evening television, Sánchez and Bezos sound like a run-of-the-mill middle-class family. But then you remember that Bezos is one of the richest men in the history of the world – with a eye-watering net worth of more than $166 billion, Fortune noted. That means that the piece conveniently excludes a frank conversation about the world’s current struggle with inequality, as well as what the ultra-rich don’t care to admit – that they’re the worst.
America is amazing. A man who was once the richest person alive still feels the urge to cosplay as a working class stiff. Can you imagine, like, a Saudi oil sheikh or a Russian oligarch dressing up for a photoshoot as a humble ranch hand? Incredible pic.twitter.com/IKvrUxfGqp

The Sánchez-Bezos weekday revolves around their kids, but this has a carbon footprint typical of the ultrawealthy, including a chartered bimonthly flight from LA to Lake Washington.
Besides the helicopter rides and various luxury properties, there’s also a giant pink diamond engagement ring (“When Jeff opened the box, I think I blacked out a bit”) and bidding wars over a Balenciaga couture dress (both her and Kim Kardashian got one each in the end).
Sánchez talks up her and Bezos’ philanthropy, including supporting tuition-free preschool and taking trips to Tijuana to chop zucchini in a relief kitchen. She boasts about the Bezos Earth Fund, which has tossed $10 billion into environmental causes.
“I think Jeff and I really are focusing on the long-term commitment to climate, and we’re extremely optimistic about it,” she says, noting his 417-foot yacht, Koru, can sail using wind power.
That same yacht is apparently constructed from so-called “blood timber”, while, Bezos’ $500 million superyacht – the largest of its kind in the world – also kind of throws any environmental pledge out the window.
Oh yes, and their homes are well-staffed. One of them, Mercedes Wedaa, made headlines last year as she sued the mogul for racial discrimination and being forced to work long shifts in poor conditions without rests or meal breaks.
This wolf in discount sheep’s clothing behaviour has recently gained a new nickname, ‘quiet luxury’. But this tactic to seem humble, despite the inside of a pocketbook that would suggest otherwise, is gaining backlash as wealth inequality spikes and resentment towards billionaires grows.
As the ultrawealthy found extra riches during the pandemic, as a report from the nonprofit Oxfam found, the average American ran into a high cost of living, an impenetrable housing market, and massive student loans.
Bezos’ ex-wife is at least a little more in touch with this reality on the ground, donating large chunks of her divorce settlement wealth to these persistent issues.
Meanwhile, Sánchez and Bezos will be flying to outer space soon in Dolce & Gabanna leather pants and flamboyant hats, taunting us all as we dare look up.
