Described as a ‘posh living room wrapped up in a passenger van’, the Nissan Hyper Tourer is set to make it’s debut at the Tokyo Motor Show next week, and by the images that have been ‘leaked’, this van will be on every silicon-valley soccer mom’s Christmas list.
Top Gear waxed lyrical recently about the new addition to the EV market, saying that the Hyper Tourer is a ‘fully electric passenger van built to enjoy journeys with friends and loved ones or a space in which to conduct important business’.
The striking exterior with its super sharp features is apparently styled to demonstrate “traditional Japanese beauty”, but the van certainly doesn’t look ‘beautiful’, but rather ‘futuristic’. This is of course all the rage eversince Tesla’s Cybertruck made box-looking cars the next thing.
Nissan says the “EV minivan concept’s “high-energy density” battery, all-wheel-drive system and low centre of gravity give it flat acceleration and deceleration”, and “an innovative AI system” is able to monitor biometric signs like heart rate and breathing in the driver.
Okay, so it’s a suped-up medical device that can take you on holiday. Why not.
There are only four seats inside (Japan have small families), with the front two having 360-degree swivel capabilities so you can scold your kids for messing slushy in the back seat without having to strain your neck.
There are lights in the overhead console with traditional Japanese designs and an LED panel on the floor capable of showing visuals of a riverbed and the sky, while the rear passengers can control the sat nav and radio using wearable monitors. As much as Nissan tries to look into the future with this one, it just feels all too much really. The purpose of a minivan is to transport family and friends, yet this feels like a Scientology ‘clear test’ machine wrapped up in enough tech to make Elon have another child. Calm down carmakers.
