Here at 2Oceansvibe, we take the business of declaring summer open very seriously.
Not only is this the clarion call to shed those bulky winter garbs and slip into something with a bit more summery sexiness, but it’s also the time to put away the winter dreariness and embrace the endless possibilities of summer.
It’s been a cold and wet winter, and we’ve had our fair share of disasters – some natural, some entirely man-made. But at some point, we must declare “F*** It” and put on our flip-flops.
The standard metric employed to indicate the start of summer has always been the WeatherPro app showing a full week of sunny icons for Cape Town. It would seem that we have arrived at this meteorological point once more, and as Wednesday threatens to nibble at a balmy 30°C, we are left with no choice but to call it.
Now you must be thinking that it’s only mid-October, how can we possibly declare summer open? There are two very good reasons for this (three if you count the glorious sunrise over Cape Town this morning).
Firstly, declaring the start of summer vibes this early gives everyone a chance to get their holiday plans prepped. Soon, the Gautengers that have not already moved down to Cape Town will be flooding Clifton Beach and the V&A Waterfront, and the price of lobster in our fine seaside eateries will soar along with the paragliders over Signal Hill.
The next month will be happy hour for locals, so get out there and explore while there’s still some room to move.
The second, and perhaps the best reason to kickstart this year’s frivolities a bit early, is that it gives us more time to share some love with you dear readers – those who have stumbled upon our daily dispatches recently, as well as the ones who have faithfully followed the vibe for almost two decades now.
Calling summer this early gives us a chance to reward you lovely people for sticking with us, and with you in mind, we will be dropping some sizzling prizes to make your summer even hotter.
Thanks to our loyal partners, and some of your favourite brands, we are going to dish out cases of award-winning wines, dinners at the swankiest restaurants, bucket list experiences, and even some summer merch. All you have to do is to follow the vibe and keep your eyes peeled.
We still have some days to go before we can put 2023 to bed, so let’s make the best of it. Thank you for sticking with us during this bizarre year, we love all of you weird and wonderful people.
So stay tuned. 2023 ain’t done yet, and neither are we.
