GroundUp’s investigative journalists Marecia Damons and Daniel Steyn are exposing the convicted Facebook rapist and murderer Thabo Bester’s evil antics in new detail.
The journalists, who were awarded the 2023 Sanef Nat Nakasa Award for Media Integrity for their series of articles which thrust the sensational Bester saga into the public limelight, compelling proper action against the criminal, have released a new book.
On sale today, The Thabo Bester Story: The Facebook rapist, the Celebrity Doctor and the Escape from Cell 35 will outline the convicted rapist and murderer’s daring escape from Bloemfontein’s Mangaung Correctional Centre in May 2022, going into detail about some of the terrible things he did to land up there as well.
If you need some catching up, it is alleged that Thabo faked his death and placed a body decoy in the prison cell with help from his accomplice and girlfriend, Nandipha Magudumana. She is alleged to have smuggled the body of Katlego Bereng into the prison with the help of several prison officials, who are now on trial along with Bester and the disgraced former celeb doctor.
The book follows the fascinating trail of the investigation, which reveals the depth of Thabo’s psychopathic scamming, as well as the baffling relationship between him and Magudumana.

Obviously, Thabo and Magudumana are totally freaking out while in custody. Their law firm Loubser and Loubser Inc. sent out a letter of demand to NB Publishers, GroundUp News, and several booksellers, according to GroundUp.
Bester’s attorneys demanded a digital copy of a new book, threatening an urgent court application to interdict the publication of the book.
According to the letter, neither “our client nor Dr. Magudumana have granted the right, permission or authority to any party to write and/or publish the book. We also place on record that there were no personal interviews held with our client or Dr. Magudumana which raises imminent concerns regarding the accuracy and correctness of the version which stands to be published soon.”
According to Loubser and Loubser Inc., Bester wants to “avoid being prosecuted in and by the media before the matter is concluded in the normal cause of the legal processes.”
NB Publishers said it “fundamentally disagrees with the startling claim that authors are required to obtain prior permission from the subject of a book on current affairs and maintain that all the standard protocols were followed in the compilation of the book”.
The book is going ahead, Bester, get over it. As a teaser, head over to GroundUp to read an extract from the book: “How Thabo Bester murdered Nomfundo Tyhulu“. It’s pretty shocking.
The Thabo Bester Story: The Facebook rapist, the Celebrity Doctor and the Escape from Cell 35 will be available at all major bookstores nationwide.
