The world woke up on Sunday to the news of another war as militants rained down death on Israel in a coordinated attack by the Hamas militant group.
The worst part of this latest tragedy was the indiscriminate killing of several revellers who descended on the Israeli desert during a peaceful music concert.
Videos on social media show people dancing underneath a tented dancefloor when thousands of rockets were launched from Gaza by Hamas, startling the attendees of the Supernova Music Festival.
The revellers tried to flee, but the traffic from the site caused a massive traffic jam. Then gunshots started ringing out.
Amid the chaos, hundreds of young people began to run into the desert, out of breath and clutching bags, desperate to reach safety. One of the festivalgoers, Eliav Klein, said he saw rockets launched from Gaza. “Everyone just started running in all directions. Nobody knew where to go,” he said.
“My friend had to jump off a cliff that was 25 feet high as he was running away from terrorists to save his life,” he added, saying another friend witnessed victims on their knees at gunpoint.
Of the thousands in attendance, current estimates are that 260 people were killed outright, with many more abducted by Hamas soldiers. Several videos on social media showed the unsuspecting crowd earlier dancing to music as the motorized paragliders could be seen coming down in the distance.

Disturbing photos posted online by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs also show people who were gunned down in the street while fleeing the Tribe of Nova music festival near Gaza, while one snapshot captures a bloodied hostage loaded in the back of a Hamas vehicle.

Some of the videos are too disturbing to frivolously share around, so we won’t, but the world’s media will be flashing these across our screens more than enough in the next few weeks. If you need to be reminded of what we are capable of as a species, go ahead and google it for yourself.
It’s going to be a long and bloody few months, with finger-pointing and victims on both sides. The hatred in this part of the world runs deep and far into the past. But whatever people’s ideological motivations are, it can never excuse killing innocent civilians.
This is hopefully the time when the rest of the world puts away their agendas and realises that two wars in the Northern Hemisphere do not bode well for humanity.
We are still human, aren’t we?
