Netflix’s newly released erotic thriller is one of the streaming platform’s best-reviewed movies of the entire year on Rotten Tomatoes.
Fair Play is the best-reviewed English-language thriller on Netflix this year, surpassing titles including Heart of Stone and Extraction 2 in terms of critical acclaim.
The new movie, which was written and directed by Chloe Domont, stars Alden Ehrenreich and Phoebe Dynevor as newly engaged couple Luke and Emily. They have to keep their relationship a secret at their shared workplace, a major hedge fund, which becomes complicated when both of them vie for a prestigious promotion.
As tensions rise, their competitiveness could potentially tear their relationship apart. And as we know there is no trouble like in-office relationship trouble.
171 Critics have weighed in on the drama, and according to Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a score of 87%, which is higher than many of this year’s offerings from the streaming giant. It not only became Netflix’s highest-rated film overall since You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah‘s Rotten Tomatoes score reached 91% following its debut on August 25, but it also became the best-reviewed thriller of 2023.
The movie should enjoy its time at the top as there is heavy competition coming up at the beginning of a strong season for Netflix original movies.
With the Academy Awards looming, more and more films will be released that are geared towards award glory. This December, movie goers can look forward to the stop-motion animated Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, Zack Snyder’s space opera Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire, and Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein biopic Maestro.
My money is on Chicken Run.
With the writer strike finally over, we may see some relief from foreign language films on Netflix rosters, which may just bump Fair Play off its perch. But for now, it seems to be doing quite well amongst critics, so perhaps worth a Monday night dedicated to erotic corporate shenanigans.
