A Bulgarian drone company is looking to replace city-to-city courier vans with remote-controlled drones to ‘enable same day delivery for everyone, everywhere’.
Much like a ‘Courier Guy in the sky’, the Dronamics co-founder brothers Konstantin and Svilen Rangelov, believe this could be a viable future for same-day deliveries usually done by minivans or bakkies.
The company recently completed the successful first flight of its flagship Black Swan aircraft, flown remotely by two commercial airline pilots, near Bulgaria’s Balchik Airport. The flight, spanning 25 kilometres and lasting a little more than 10 minutes, is the first step in their hopes of commercial flights in Europe.
Obviously, the drone has limits to its payload capability, but the Black Swan has the same capacity as a delivery van, so delivering the same-sized cargo is going to be a lot quicker at least. And with a range of more than 2,400 kilometres, it’ll be able to cover the distance between Chicago and Los Angeles, or any two points in mainland Europe.
With Black Swan, Dronamics is promising to halve overall costs, reduce delivery times by up to 80% and remove up to 60% of emissions compared to other modes of transport. Flying within the firm’s network of ‘Droneports’, it will initially complete time-sensitive deliveries in industries such as e-commerce, health care, perishables, engineering and mining.
As awesome as it may seem though, these services are still a long way away from being available to the average Joe.
