Forget fictional Beth Harmon from The Queen’s Gambit, we have our own proudly South African chess champ who is the real deal.
Inspiring 12-year-old chess prodigy Imkhitha Joya, hailing from Crossroads in Cape Town, has secured a coveted opportunity to represent South Africa at the prestigious World Cadets Championship 2023 in Egypt, scheduled for 14-27 October .
With just three years of dedicated practice, Imkhitha’s rapid ascent in the world of chess is truly remarkable. The young chess player’s unyielding determination has propelled her to overcome obstacles and attain her current standing, earning her the title of the top-ranked player in the Western Cape and the second-ranked player in all of South Africa, boasting an impressive chess rating of 1501.
To facilitate Imkhitha’s participation in the World Cadets Chess Championship 2023, her devoted coach, Thando Hlakula, initiated a crowdfunding campaign on her behalf. Coach Thando, who has been by his students’ side every step of the way, expressed his admiration for Imkhitha and her journey in the world of chess.
“It still baffles me that a 12-year-old can reach this level of maturity. Imkhitha’s exceptional qualities extend beyond her chess skills. She exemplifies perseverance, discipline, analytical thinking, and the ability to handle pressure, making her a standout amongst her peers.”
Imkhitha’s determination and passion for the game shines out through a recent clip of the rising star sharing her dream to attend the international meet:
Let’s say ‘check mate’ to the barriers and be a part of the community effort to ensure that this young chess sensation can shine on the international stage, through her campaign here.
