We grew up watching Adam Sandler comedies that solidified him as the cheekiest giggle-guy of the 2000s, and now at 56 years old, Billy Madison has released a passion project involving his close family that old and new fans alike can appreciate.
It’s a sharp turn from the actor’s serious role in Uncut Gems, and we’re excited for him to tickle our funny bones once more.
The cute new Netflix flick titled You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah looks like the ultimate coming-of-age comedy, with snappy jokes flying in from every angle. Not only does the film feature iconic American actress Idina Mendzel of Frozen fame, but also Sandler’s very own wife of 20 years, Jackie Sandler, and the couple’s two daughters, Sunny and Sadie.
Based on the 2005 young adult novel of the same name by Fiona Rosenbloom, the movie has been adapted by Alison Peck into a modern tale for the big screen, and is directed by rising-star female director Sammi Cohen.
The feature’s release has been announced for August 25 this year, but while we wait, we can enjoy the trailer dropped by Netflix this week:
As someone who has attended many a friend’s bar mitzvah (featuring excited 13-year-old boys, dancing, and buffets), it’s exciting to see a depiction of the Jewish cultural celebration for young women, the lesser-spoken-of bat mitzvah.
It’s also an honest look into cultures of materialism and teenagehood. and how families manoeuvre these tricky terrains together.
As the trailer makes its rounds on the web, some netizens have proclaimed that the new movie looks good enough for them to reconsider cancelling the big red ‘N’ streaming service, with one user named @Macklive commenting:
“The Sandler Dynasty grows. I love how Sandler brings the family into his projects. This movie looks funny AF. I was just about to cancel my Netflix and this new Sandler movie just got me rethinking that lol.”
Sandler is taking ‘family values’ to the next level with this new project and I, for one, will definitely be heading to the cinema for this barrel of laughs.
