Commuters and onlookers witnessed a large truck carrying boxes of oranges overturning on Tuesday, just off the N3 off-ramp in Durban.
When paramedics arrived at the scene, they found that the truck had tipped right across the freeway, blocking the entire road as drivers tried to make alternative routes.
As oranges tumbled from the huge industrial vehicle, passers-by took the moment of chaos to nab fruit.
The mayhem was captured in a video, showing truck drivers, responders and looters all crowding around the fruit carrier.
Private Durban Advanced Life Support (ALS) service was quick to arrive, with paramedic Garrith Jamieson attending to the truck driver’s minor injuries sustained in the accident.
It seems like the biggest victims here were the oranges snatched up by looters who managed to beat responders to the vitamin C feast. Check out the havoc in the video shown by IOL here.
The screenshot below gives an idea of just how quickly moments like this can turn into fruitful pandemonium for passers-by. Hearts go out to the driver, who will have to explain to his boss that the delivery will certainly not reach its destination.
Strangely enough, Jamieson found that there had been no other cars involved in the incident. The police will be investigating the matter, in order to glean more about what exactly went down.[source:iol]
