Professional surfer, Mikala Jones, died in a freak accident on Sunday when his surfboard’s fin impaled his groin, severing an artery and causing the celebrated sportsman to bleed out.

Jones was known throughout the surfing world for his mesmerising videos captured while riding inside of breaking waves, offering a unique first-person view into the world of tube-riding.

The surfer had been staying at the Awera Resort with his family, when around 9:15AM he is believed to have impaled his left groin on his surfboard fin, suffering a 10-centimetre-long gash, according to official reports.

The Hawaii local has been documenting his adventures in stunning GoPro videos and on Youtube, with many calling him “one of the 21st century’s most photogenic surfers.”

His daughter, Isabella, confirmed her father’s tragic passing in an Instagram post.

The worldwide surfing community has reacted with shock, with many paying heartfelt tributes to ‘one of the greats’.

“Mikala you were one of a kind. Funny, mellow, an explorer, a pioneer but most of all loving husband and father.”
