Following closely on the heels of the Treasury mumbling something about ‘no evidence of sanctions’, the US wants to move this year’s AGOA summit away from South Africa to ‘punish us’. Daddy is taking his belt off.
The statement by the biggest turd in the toilet bowl of international politics is supported by lawmakers on both sides of the American political divide and Republicans and Democrats agree that South Africa is being a ‘bad actor’ as it accuses our government of deepening its military relationship with Russia.
As the guardians of the galaxy, the US now feels that SA should be punished by moving the summit to [insert obedient country here]. But AGOA gives duty-free access to 25% of South African exports to the US, SA’s second-biggest single-country trading partner after China. So yeah, it would sting a bit.
(We) question whether a country in danger of losing AGOA benefits should have the privilege of hosting the 2023 AGOA Forum.
South Africa has denied supplying Russia with arms, but the US insists that a Russian cargo vessel, subject to US sanctions, docked in South Africa’s largest naval port, and their intelligence suggests that the South African government used this opportunity to covertly supply Russia with arms and ammunition that could be used in its illegal war in Ukraine.
This, along with our military exercises with Russia, and Cyril and the boys’ fancy footwork to host Putin at the BRICS summit is riling up the Americans to the point where we are now being told there is ‘no evidence of sanctions’. In other words, there might be evidence of sanctions.
The loss of AGOA would be a hard blow to South African vehicle exports in particular. The US was SA’s second-largest total automotive export market, with vehicles and components to the value of R24 billion being exported there.
So ja, it’s a conundrum. And while we sit on the sidelines eagerly awaiting the ANC’s next boneheaded move, we are being dragged into a conflict that has nothing to do with the average South African. But as with everything SA, it won’t be Cyril and his red team that bears the brunt of their disastrous flirtation with dodgy world leaders. It will be the voting fodder.
It is a bit cheeky of the US to threaten us over support for an illegal war considering they have been illegally warring all over the planet for the last century now, but what we want to know is what is so important about being buddies with Putin that we are willing to risk our entire economy? It’s not like he’s a Gupta. But then again, the Guptas don’t deal in nuclear power, and their kickbacks have been spent already.
It may just be that the ANC really does hate the West that much. To an understandable degree. Hell, even the Americans hate themselves at the moment.
With Trump and his supporters threatening a civil war, and Biden mumbling and stumbling all over the place, they have been forced to look to their celebrities for non-binary wisdom and gender-affirming leadership, Fortunately, as everyone knows, winning an Emmy gives you incredible insight into the world of politics, religion, biology, and economics.
Punish us? We’ve been having it courtesy of the ANC for a while now, so Biden, Trump, Cyril, Putin, and Drew Barrymore can all get stuffed.
The rest of us victims and voters already are.
