Comedian and prankster, Jimmy Kimmel recently urged parents to prank their children by giving them fake gifts for Christmas and then film the results with his “’I Gave My Kid A Terrible Present’ YouTube Challenge. Click through to see some of the children’s amazing reactions.
Kimmel pulled a similar stunt a few months ago with his ‘I Told My Kids I Ate All Their Halloween Candy Challenge’ when he asked parents to tell their children that they had eaten all the Halloween candy and film the kids’ reactions. That prank, as is the case with this one, yielded hilarious results.
Although both videos are undeniably funny, they also shed light on American parenting, or rather the lack thereof. It’s not the fact that they talk back to their parents or throw tantrums, it’s how they go about it. Cheeky and entitled, it seems that they are usually the ones who are in control.
As with most things, it’s easy to criticise from the outside, and seeing as I’m not a parent, I’m not technically qualified to comment on matters relating to the issue. That being said, I can say that when I was younger if I had ever used a tone like any of the children in the videos I would’ve gone to bed with a sore bum and a sober temperament and I’m a better man for it. Thanks Mom and Dad.
