“Eish, from a dead sleep to rock and roll,” someone in Johannesburg recalls of the 4,7 magnitude earthquake that hit the East Rand in Johannesburg on Sunday morning.
Residents were shaken awake by the Earth rumble, with “neighbourhood dogs and roosting hadedas” feeling it, too, according to this one Joburger, also noting how their “little cat was petrified. Her tail was twice its [sic] normal size”, per The South African.
The Council of Geoscience’s automated and preliminary information of the natural event recorded a 4,7 magnitude earthquake on Gauteng’s East Rand, with coordinates in Alberton, reported News24. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) also recorded the quake as just below a magnitude 5 quake.

Videos posted on social media showed a sustained shaking, in what one Twitter user described as a “moving train”, while another described the wobble as if “someone was shaking my bed and wouldn’t stop”.

Here are others recounting the experience:
“Well over ninety seconds of tremors,” added another Alberton resident. “I was sleeping in bed when I woke up due to the loud noise and shaking. It felt like someone was shaking my bed and wouldn’t stop,” said someone in Ekurhuleni.
…A Boksburg resident said, “This Earthquake was one of the scariest ones I have ever felt in South Africa. There has [sic] been a few Earthquakes last year, but this one was the most terrifying one. My house shook for like 5 seconds. And I heard the Earthquake afterwards aswel [sic]l.”
Social media became flooded with reaction videos, CCTV footage, and other comments about the shake:

While Earthquakelist.org also noted that this was the strongest earthquake the country had experienced in about six years, per Mail&Guardian, everything seemed to remain mostly intact.
Although, it is unclear at this stage if it has led to any damages or injury.
