TikTok is not just for parkour tricks and teenagers twerking.
A pair of crime scene cleaners have gained a loyal following after they started sharing the bloody mess that is their jobs, and unless you are a fan of Saw, this is definitely not something you want to insert into your algorithm.
Long Islanders Tom DeSena, 23, and Junior Lallbachan, 26, have started the social media account @thesoulmediators where they document their gory day jobs.
The visceral nature of their jobs seems to be quite popular as well and the pair have attracted 250 000 followers since they started documenting the horrorshow that sometimes accompanies death.
The pair works for an undisclosed company, but are always given a paper in advance containing an address and a description of the brutality of the crime they’re about to work on. Despite these details, they usually ask the same questions before entering the premises, like are/were there any drugs, are there any animals, and are there any weapons?
It’s definitely not the kind of thing you would find on a bookkeeper’s checklist for the day.
“We rarely will receive pictures of the scene, but regardless, pictures only do so much,” he added. “It’s almost better to walk into these jobs not knowing too much because it keeps us fully alert — it keeps us on our toes, proactive and ready for anything.”
Their job includes cleaning up the results of everything from murder-suicides to unattended deaths. DeSena has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, but like most young men, he struggled to find a job in his field. Getting this job, however, was a lot easier.
“I never particularity had an interest in the field of gore and gruesomeness, but I never had a weak stomach either. This job, simply put, just sounded cool and different. And I think I’m pretty cool, and I am definitely different.”
DeSena said that the most gruesome crime scene he has worked on involved two victims that he believes are “still alive.”
“A man had his friend over to hang out at his house at night with him and his wife, there was either alcohol or drugs involved, but something led to the friend finding and grabbing a hammer, and assaulting not only his friend, but his wife. Both the man and his wife were left for hours in different parts of the home, in critical condition, until one of the two had presumably called 911.”
Lallbachan however says his worst scene involved a trunk full of dead bodies. Enough said.
The pair are aware of the emotional and psychological effects that their job has on them, but Lallbachan says he often pretends that the gruesome sights he sees aren’t real.
“Of course, every now and again something comes to mind, but I just remind myself that it was not me, or my life. I convince myself that it was not even real, in a way.”
Both, however, admit that the job ‘is difficult’. There are however rewarding aspects to doing this, such as the travel and feeling like they get to help people in dealing with the aftermath of a relative’s violent death.
You can have a look at their TikTok account below but be warned that it is guaranteed to turn your stomach and dampen your mood.
