For a country that is technically still at war with its northern neighbour, South Korea seems to be everyone’s darling at the moment.
South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol treated guests at the White House to an impromptu karaoke on Wednesday night as he performed a pretty good rendition of Don McLean’s American Pie, with even US President Joe Biden appearing to be roused from his slumber.
After discussing the usual depressing issues like escalating nuclear tensions with North Korea, the White House hosted a gala dinner in honour of the South Korean president, and with very little encouragement needed, President Yoon Suk Yeol took to the mike like a pro, sharing his love of American music with the amused dignitaries.
“We know this is one of your favourite songs, American Pie,” Biden said to Yoon, having pulled him up on to the stage at the end of the evening to listen to singers perform the classic.
In a sweet gesture, Biden then presented the South Korean president with a guitar signed by Don Mclean. The singer was unable to be there on the evening, but judging by the video, he wasn’t really needed.
This is such a wholesome moment that one could almost forget about politics for a moment. It’s also a much catchier tune than Umshini Wami. Check it out and enjoy the earworm:
