An Eastern Cape man has been arrested after allegedly trying to sell the penis of a 68-year-old man.
The man was reportedly taken into custody during a citizen’s arrest after he was found with the dismembered penis at a shopping mall in the small town of Butterworth on Thursday, per News24.
Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nomthetheleli Lillian Mene has praised the community for arresting the suspect at Fingoland Shopping Mall:
“This is a despicable and cruel act. The actions of the suspect are inhumane, and justice must take its course.”
The 32-year-old man appeared in the Butterworth Magistrate’s Court on Monday on a charge of the unlawful possession of human tissue, said police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli.
Nkohli believes the man was looking for a buyer in Butterworth after chopping them from the 68-year-old man in OR Tambo District.
The suspect is expected to be transferred to Mthatha, where he will face a charge of attempted murder. Meanwhile, the victim is recovering in the hospital, without his manhood.
It is still uncertain if there is actually a market for penises in the Eastern Cape but considering the popularity of muti (traditional medicine) in the area and beyond, it’s likely.
We can all make an educated guess about the kind of fortune/misfortune such a body part is capable of.
