Nando’s are the masters at poking fun at our South African peculiarities, even when the subject matter is a bit depressing. But a recent fake Nando’s advert about the human turd Thabo Bester has gotten under its skin.
The ‘Nando’s advert’ has become South Africa’s version of SNL and whenever the chicken franchise drops a new one, Mzansi can expect a bit of laughter at the ridiculousness that is our weird reality.
Fans often get on board and the franchise has in the past chuckled along with us to ‘fake Nando’s adverts’.
A recent fan-generated advert has however ruffled the franchise’s feathers and they were quick to point out that it was ‘in bad taste’.

Humour is a tricky thing, and sometimes what is meant to be funny can become cringy and offensive. Along with most of South Africa, Nando’s obviously don’t find anything funny about the sordid mess that is the Thabo Bester saga.
“Whilst we value the enthusiasm of fans for our brand, we don’t appreciate the production of these fake ads/parody accounts. This is in bad taste and is in no way aligned to our brand or values.”
The fake ad plays with the name of Dr Nandipha Magudumana, with imnandi-pha loosely translating to it’s delicious.
Ja nee, not so funny. The whole Bester thing has left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth, so it’s no wonder Nando’s arent amused, even though some Twitter twits saw it fit to question why the brand would diss the advert.
“A whole company with a marketing strategy ya di jokes is suddenly catching feelings.”
“For all the unhinged ads you guys have had in the past this is where you draw the line?”
We’re with Nando’s on this one.
Yes, they have poked fun at a lot of the stupidity that South Africa dishes up daily, but there is nothing funny about Bester and his gang. Hopefully, the stink that surrounds the rapist murderer and his criminally stupid girlfriend will be gone soon.
Until then, leave the subtle art of taking the piss to the professionals.
