The Dalai Lama seems to have gotten himself into a heap of trouble for a rather bizarre and very inappropriate exchange with a young follower.
The 87-year-old Buddhist priest was videoed interacting with a minor boy that came up to meet him, and after what started as a normal interaction, the Dalai Lama kissed the boy on the lips before sticking his tongue out and apparently asking the boy “can you suck my tongue.”
Naturally, netizens have lost their minds in an uproar, and rightly so.
According to NPR, the Dalai Lama has apologised for the inappropriate interaction, saying that he “regrets the incident”.
“His Holiness often teases people he meets in an innocent and playful way, even in public and before cameras.”
Asking someone, especially a young child, to suck your tongue is neither innocent nor playful, and despite the apology, this ‘incident” is going to become a holy mess in the coming weeks.
