A couple of Engen petrol attendants not only saved the lives of every passenger inside a taxi that caught on fire but the entire petrol station and all the people nearby.

Their heroic efforts were shared on Twitter, showing the speed at which they helped commuters escape from a burning taxi, promptly putting out the fire so that it didn’t cause a more severe situation.

As you know, petrol stations are highly flammable, and a small fire can become massively deadly within seconds if the gas reserves catch on fire.

The Citizen reported that the video was posted by Peche Africa from what appears to be CCTV camera footage:

The exact location is unknown, though based on the registration plates of the vehicles seen at the station, the incident is likely to have taken place in Gauteng.

In addition, while no date can be seen clearly, ‘2023’ is displayed in the top-hand left corner of the footage, along with the time, 07h51, and the day indicated as Friday.

Watch the moment the tired-looking Toyota HiAce taxi burst into flames at the Engen station, sending passengers into a frenzy to get out, breaking through windows and scuttling to safety while the petrol attendants tried to unjam the doors and extinguish the flames:

It seems all the passengers managed to get out, and without confirmation of an investigation into the incident, it is uncertain what kind of injuries they walked away with.

At least, they walked away with their lives intact, though.

As for the cause of the fire:

Based on the rocking motion of the HiAce before it was meant to leave, plus the driver being depicted reaching for the column-mounted gear lever before the first flame emerges, it would appear that a stall followed by a possible backfiring resulted in the inferno, though this is purely speculative.

Nonetheless, the brave actions of the petrol attendants are highly commendable.

Stuff a Bells, give those men a promotion and a lekker little compensation for saving the entire petrol station from near disaster.
