We all know and love Derek Watts, the TV personality who is a South African household name on the investigative journalism show, Carte Blanche.
Shame, he is not doing so well right now.
The legendary journalist is “learning to walk again” after “collapsing” in Hoedspruit in March, noted News24.
He took to Twitter on Sunday morning, informing his followers that he is recovering at Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg after an incident first suspected to be a stroke.
Suffice it to say, he looks really rof. But despite looking like he went to hell and back, getting run over by a truck in the process, he seems to be grinning and bearing it:
Morning! Looks scary but collapsed with suspected stroke in Hoedspruit 14 days ago and despatched to super pro Mill Park Hospital ICU. Diagnosed severe Sepsis which destroyed the bod in an hour! So learning to walk again. But back on your #carteblanche screen asap! @MNet @DStv pic.twitter.com/EuwubujWIU

According to Mayo Clinic, sepsis is “a serious condition in which the body responds improperly to an infection:
“The infection-fighting processes turn on the body, causing the organs to work poorly. The condition, if not treated, can progress to septic shock – a dramatic drop in blood pressure that can damage the lungs, kidneys, liver and other organs. When the damage is severe, it can lead to death.”
The stress of working on huge breaking stories that build the nation and keep our government in check must be profound, so we forgive the dude for collapsing.
He, however, seems to be less forgiving of himself, keen to be “back on your #CarteBlanche screen asap”.
In a statement to News24, Carte Blanche executive producer, John Webb said, “It says a lot about the legend that is Derek Watts that, within days of being admitted to hospital, he was itching to get back into the field.”
“For now, he’s following the advice of his excellent medical team and giving his body time to recover. We can’t wait to have him back on camera, doing what he does best.”
The M-Net news show wished him well in a retweet:
We look forward to having you back in the #CarteBlanche studio soon! But for now, focus on healing both body and mind. You have the entire team behind you 💙💙💙 https://t.co/h9DYJVlm1a

We wish you a speedy and thorough recovery, too, Derek. Sunday night is simply not the same without you.
