Oh, mummy. Grief manifests differently for different people, but this particular case is next level.
A grieving Polish son mummified his mother’s corpse and kept her “in perfect condition” on the couch for 13 years straight.
Known locally as “Vampire”, the 76-year-old man, named only as Marian L., dug up his mother’s grave in the small town of Radlin, southwest Poland, took her body to his home and placed her on the sofa in front of his TV, where he could chat away with her.
The Daily Mail says that locals knew very little about the pensioner, describing him as a loner who avoided contact with people, even calling him the ‘vampire’.
Poor Marian is now facing jail time for several charges, reported The NZ Herald. The disturbing discovery was made when the 76-year-old man’s estranged brother-in-law decided to visit his home:
After showing up at the house, the brother-in-law saw the man, named Marian L, walking around outside the property “looking mad”, so he decided to call paramedics.
Upon arrival, paramedics entered the property and found the mummified corpse of Jadwiga L lying on a couch on top of old newspapers dating back to 2009.
Prosecutors noted that the elderly woman had passed away and was buried in January 2010 but her grave remains empty:
Head of the district prosecutor’s office Marcin Felsztyński told local media the smell was disgusting and they firmly believe chemicals were used to preserve the dead woman’s body.
“Everything indicates that the man must have used some chemicals to mummify the corpse. The smell of mothballs was noticeable. The body was apparently in “perfect condition”, police claimed.
Police believe he may have transported her body by bike as he lives just 300 metres away from the cemetery.
The initial discovery was made in February but has now made global news after the woman’s son was charged with the desecration of a corpse.
Marian’s mother will now be reburied.
