A Supersport commentator has sparked some discussion recently when he identified a group of men as “okes” during a Varsity Cup rugby match.
Focussing on the typical dress code for oke-ness – backward cap, sunglasses, shorts, and an unbuttoned shirt – the unnamed presenter caused a laugh as he tried to identify the “okest” oke among the group of student minions. The presenter must have been from a public school as he kept returning to the manne for another stab at their okeness.
He does however have a point about the standard dress for okeness, especially the soft coloured caps that work well on the golf course and in the rez, the almost too-short shorts that allow for easy movement as you climb into your dad’s Prado, and always the forearms that look like tree trunks.
We are of course being a little mean to these guys, but in all fairness, everyone fits a version of the okeness, even the ladies. Stereotyping people is wrong, and if you ask any athleisure-wearing vegan cougar who drives a Porsche Cayenne, she will tell you the same. So too will most mediocre wise-ass writers who think they’re funny.
We’re all a stereotype to someone else, so let the “okes” enjoy their game.

At least South Africans on TikTok could see the funny side:
“Nah bru, I’ll have my dad call his lawyer.”
“Thank you @SuperSportTV for this absolute ✨masterpiece.”
“Imagine being trolled on live TV by Supersport.”
“Blue shirt and cap with glasses is King Oke, the leader of the Okes.”
It’s definitely a timeless look.
