It’s always great to start the new week with some good news!
After a riveting week of hockey in Egypt, both South African men’s and women’s U21 sides have taken the gold in the African Champions Hockey tournament in Egypt. After an extremely tough match against the Zimbabwean team, Jesquinique Coltman from the South African women’s side managed to score the only goal of the match, and the ladies were crowned the best Junior African women’s team for the 7th time in a row.
The men had a tough time against the home team and after a deflection from an Egyptian stick, Leruo Ditlhakanyane managed to score the first goal. Egypt remained in the fight and after three minutes the scores were equalised, forcing a nerve-racking penalty shootout for the win.
South Africa had a 4-3 lead after the shootout when Egypt missed their last attempt, and the game was ours. This was the first double win for the local peeps in almost 10 years.
Congratulations to our SA U21 Women and Men who are both African Champions after two amazing finals against Zimbabwe and Egypt respectively! #JAC2023 pic.twitter.com/aSw9EZo4xo
