We can’t believe we missed this.
An Iranian man, Amou Haji, 94, fell ill and died a few months after taking his first bath in 60 years. The reason for never taking a bath in all those years was that Amou believed that cleaning yourself could make you ill.
He believed this so strongly that he walked out on his family one day, and literally just went to ground for the next 60 years until the world was introduced to him on YouTube late last year.
The 94-year-old man lived in and around the village of Dejgah, and according to reports he was well-loved by the villagers and a happy fellow. He slept in a hole in the ground and drank water from wherever he could find it. He smoked anything he could find, including animal poop out of a drainpipe, and whenever he got hungry he chowed down on dead animals. Imagine Keith Richard crossed with a garden gnome.
According to a series on him, Amou left his home to ‘pursue a healthier lifestyle’, and according to him, this means sleeping in a hole and eating roadkill. It seemed to have worked as he only died after a long 60 years of living like a squirrel. Amou was also right about bathing.
