A KZN activist and founder of the Kwanele Foundation has spoken to the press about her bizarre interactions with the newly crowned Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini after she has now come to fear for her life.
Sihle Sibisi, who fights to end violence against women and children, was summoned to the king’s palace after the annual reed dance in September last year.
Sibisi was hoping to speak with the king about her work with gender-based violence victims, but it appears the monarch had other ideas.
They took me in to see the king. It was in a boardroom with glass. I walked in and took off my shoes, but I was limping because I was wearing a brace. I greeted him and he said: ‘What a beautiful babe, come here and hug me.’ He started squeezing my buttocks.
After the awkward encounter, they posed for pictures, with the king’s aunt insisting that she be in the shots as well, so as to not ‘piss off’ the king’s wife, Queen Ntokozo Mayisela-Zulu.
Afterwards, she was ‘instructed’ to spend the night with the king, but refused.
“Before I left, he asked to see me in private with 3 Seconds [the king’s traditional healer]. He said he needed me in his life because he needed a strong woman like me … When I had to leave, he begged me not to go … and the next thing he invited me to his room. When I got there, he was with his son…”
Sibisi again declined King Misuzulu’s advances and left. But the amorous king seemed to have his sights set on her because the next time they met, he insisted on accompanying her to a fertility clinic.
Not exactly a romantic date, but it seemed to have worked as Sibisi acknowledges that after the laboratory visit, they spent their first night together.
Following the night of science-approved passion, the king stayed in touch with Sibisi and begged her to come and visit him.
“He was begging me not to take the morning-after pill [a type of emergency birth control]. He phoned me crying and was like: ‘I can’t live without you; you have to come to Ulundi.’
She relented, but after arriving at the palace, she was housed separately from the rest of the family to keep her out of the queen’s way.
“I love you and I love my nation…”
City Press has now released recordings that they have come into possession of, wherein the king can be heard pleading with Sibisi to accept his love.
In one clip he can be heard saying that he needs a new queen: “She doesn’t act like a queen and I need to find another one [wife].”
It seems however that the queen did hear about their tryst as soon after the palace released a statement referring to her as ‘an intruder who was trying to curry favour using her proximity to the king’.
Soon after their ‘relationship’ turned sour as she began receiving intimidating phone calls, and a cold shoulder from the king himself. In a released TikTok, the king even went as far as threatening Sibisi and her brother himself.
“What do you want to say to me? I will beat you up. You don’t know me. I will beat you up. Who are you and what are you trying to do?”
A royal insider has been quoted as saying that they ‘tried on numerous occasions to warn everyone about putting Misuzulu on the throne, now we are all being humiliated. There is a lot more happening behind the scenes; we don’t even know where to start.’
According to insiders, the queen has also vacated the royal palace to avoid embarrassment.
Edwin Starr’s hit War would fit well, if we change the lyrics up a bit.
Royalty, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing.
